Schiffli boring

In addition to needles, Schiffli machines have built-in borer knives under the needle line. Borer holes are small perforations in the backing fabric, commonly known as ‘eyelets’. The complete effect is achieved when cover stitches, using normal or metallic threads, are added around the edges.

Schiffli borer knives have four tapering edges which can cut holes of varying size, depending on how far they penetrate the fabric – larger cuts for faster operation, smaller cuts near the edges. In principle, the borer knife can penetrate in 13 step increments (1-13 for Plauen and 0-12 for Saurer).

In EmbroideryStudio, a Borers function is available to turn needle penetrations into boring holes. Borer depth can be controlled from within the design or on the machine itself. The smaller the value, the smaller the borer depth, and hence the smaller the hole.
